Most Americans support the Republican plan to reroute federal funding from Planned Parenthood to other qualified health clinics, a new poll finds.

About 53 percent of respondents in the Robert Morris University (RMU) poll say they support the plan to defund Planned Parenthood, including a surprising 42 percent of Democrats. Just 31.5 percent of all respondents say they are strongly or somewhat opposed to the plan.

The RMU findings contradict the findings of other recent polls, such as a recent USA Today/Suffolk University poll that finds nearly 60 percent of respondents oppose defunding Planned Parenthood.

RMU political science professor Philip Harold attributes the dramatic difference to “flawed” questions in those polls, which do not reflect the nature of the Republican plan. “One of the cardinal rules in polling is to clearly indicate the alternative in the question, and a poll question that doesn’t do this is flawed,” Harold says in a statement.

Rather than asking whether the respondents favor defunding Planned Parenthood, RMU asks respondents: “Congressional Republicans favor shifting Planned Parenthood federal funds to community clinics that perform the same services, but do not perform abortions. Would you say you support or oppose this plan?”

More than half indicate support. “This is astonishing given that the question explicitly identifies the plan as belonging to ‘Congressional Republicans,’ who are not the most popular group among Democrats,” Harold added.

Those respondents who indicate they are more aware of the undercover videos exposing Planned Parenthood’s dealings in aborted fetus parts released by The Center for Medical Progress are more likely to support the defunding plan.

About 47 percent of Democrats oppose the plan, along with 15.4 percent of Republicans and 33 percent of independents.

The poll was conducted before the shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
