Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is having an MVP-caliber season, and defensive coordinators across the league have been racking their brains to figure out a scheme to slow him down. An NFL ref learned Sunday during the Panthers game against the Giants just how difficult that is.
Newton busted a huge 47-yard run on the zone read, and as he ran toward the sideline, a Giants defensive player came in late and hit Newton, sending the Panthers star flying into the sideline official and absolutely crushing him. That wasn’t Newton’s fault at all, to be fair, but that’s still a bone-crushing hit. Luckily the official seemed to get up without being in too much pain.
