The environmental group Break Free from Fossil Fuels is planning to “shut down the world’s most dangerous fossil fuel projects” in a protest this May through mass mobilization and “civil disobedience.”
“Imagine: tens of thousands of people around the world rising up to take back control of their own destinies. Walking arm-in-arm into coal fields. Sitting down to block the business of governments and industry that threaten our future,” the group’s website says. “This May we hope to see more people than ever commit to joining actions that disrupt the industry’s power by targeting the world’s most dangerous and unnecessary fossil fuel projects.”
Environmental activists have repeatedly staged mass demonstrations including the 2014 People’s Climate March in New York City. The march gathered a great deal of media and celebrity attention, which activists are looking to replicate.
The group intends to target conventional energy projects in the United States, Germany, Spain, Australia, and (of course) Israel and Palestine.
The group is directly tied to 350.org, which is bankrolled by moneyed interests including billionaire investor Tom Steyer. Steyer, ironically, made his fortune at a investment firm which was involved with lucrative coal, gas and oil projects. Almost 400 activists directly associated with 350.org were arrested in 2014 for acts of “civil disobedience” during a single protest in front of the White House against the Keystone XL pipeline.
Break Free from Fossil Fuels also claims support from Greenpeace, which is one of the world’s most notorious environmental groups. Greenpeace has a long history of “civil disobedience” that borders on eco-terrorism.
Protesters affiliated with Greenpeace previously destroyed trials of genetically modified wheat operated by Australia’s national science agency in 2011.
“For an organisation that claims to be dedicated to the protection of the environment, this is an unconscionable act,” Suzanne Cory, president of the Australian Academy of Sciences, told the science magazine Nature in 2011.
Environmental activists associated with Greenpeace irreparably damaged the Nazca Lines, a 1,500-year-old World Heritage Site in Peru, during a publicity stunt in December 2014. The Peruvian government has attempted to file criminal charges which could carry a sentence of six years in prison against the activists.
In 2013, Greenpeace protesters destroyed a genetically modified crop of Golden Rice in the Philippines due to alleged health concerns. The rice is modified to prevent blindness and malnutrition by providing vitamin A to impoverished children. Vitamin A deficiency kills 1.15 million children each year according to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. Academic studies estimate Greenpeace’s delaying of Golden Rice in India alone has cost 1,424,000 life years since 2002.
Greenpeace’s values statement promises “we are committed to nonviolence,” but Scientific American says “their ‘non-violent’ opposition to Golden Rice contributes directly to real human death and suffering.”
