At least 20 Catholic colleges and six Catholic law schools are sponsoring active chapters of Amnesty International on campus, although the non-profit advocates worldwide for legal access to abortion.

Catholic leaders urged the church to stop supporting Amnesty International (AI), when the organization reversed its position on abortion in 2007. Rather than oppose abortion, AI began advocating for the legalization of abortion worldwide, so women could easily have an abortion if the pregnancy endangered their health or human rights.

“AI has betrayed its mission,” Cardinal Renato Martino, head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said in a statement in 2007, responding to the change in position.

AI, however, continues to find a home on many Catholic campuses. The Cardinal Newman Society found recently 20 colleges and six law schools still sponsor active student chapters of AI on campus.

Just one of the school’s responded to a request for comment from the Newman society. DU’s director of public information said the AI student chapter at the university “is focused on world peace, nonviolence and sustainability, in keeping with the Pope’s call for environmental stewardship.”

Newman Society President Patrick Reilly suggested some of the schools may still be unaware of AI’s new position on abortion, in part because of the organization’s generally well-respected work to promote human rights.

“While there is still much ignorance about Amnesty International’s radical swing toward abortion advocacy, we are informing Catholic educators and urging them to refrain from any cooperation with the organization,” Reilly said in a statement announcing the research.
