A woman working as a nanny in Moscow reportedly decapitated a 4-year-old girl’s head Monday and held it up outside a subway station while threatening to detonate a suicide vest.
Videos show the woman wearing a black traditional Muslim dress and holding what appears to be a human child’s decapitated head. Local media said most of the woman’s words were hard to interpret, but she reportedly said “I am a terrorist” and made continuous threats to blow herself up.
The suspect allegedly killed the child in a nearby apartment that she later set on fire. The body of the child was later found among the remains.
Arresting officers found no bomb on the woman and are treating the murder as a case of mental illness. Some news outlets have identified the woman as a 38-year-old from Uzbekistan, who worked as a nanny for the girl she allegedly murdered.
“Having waited for the parents to leave the flat with their older child, she killed the child for unknown reasons, set the flat on fire and fled,” investigators said, according to Russian media reports.
Fears of terrorist attacks in Russia have grown since the country started a bombing Syria in November. An airplane bound for Moscow was shot down in Egypt’s airspace in October, killing 224 people, most of whom were Russians.
