Former Gov. Mitt Romney blasted Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump in a speech Thursday, calling him a “fraud” who is “playing the American public for suckers.”
Romney laid out a case against Trump in an effort to blunt his rise following a strong showing in the Super Tuesday primaries this week, saying a Trump presidency would make the U.S. much less likely to have a safe future.
“His imagination must not be married to real power,” Romney said in the speech at the University of Utah, reported Politico.
“His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University,” he added, referencing an ongoing civil lawsuit over the school. Republican Sen. Marco Rubio has also hit Trump on the campaign trail for what he calls a “fake” university, accusing Trump of being a con artist.
Romney argued even Trump’s domestic policies, which include lower taxes and incentives designed to bring businesses back to the United States, would “lead to recession.”
“His foreign policies would make American and the world less safe,” he added. “He has neither the temperament not the judgment to be president. And his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.”
