An American-born daughter of Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera told The Guardian her father visited family in the U.S. twice while on the run after his prison break.

Rosa Isela Guzmán Ortiz, 39, said in the exclusive interview published March 4 her father visited the U.S. shortly after his October 2015 Rolling Stone interview with actor Sean Penn. The drug kingpin visited his daughter in her large California home which he bought for her and his four grandchildren. El Chapo escaped from prison in July, 2015.

Guzmán Ortiz said her home was paid for through a lawyer depositing money into a bank account on her father’s behalf. Aside from using his ill-gotten gains to buy homes for his children, El Chapo also used his narco dollars to invest in political capital, according to his daughter.

The Mexican opposition party — the National Action Party (PAN) — stated March 6 the government needed to respond to El Chapo’s daughter’s claims. Since Guzmán Ortiz’s interview, El Chapo’s current wife Emma Coronel Guzmán denied her claims, stating Rosa is not El Chapo’s daughter.
