House Speaker [crscore]Paul Ryan[/crscore] said in an interview that aired Thursday that if Donald Trump is the nominee, “we’ll make it work.”

CNBC’s John Harwood asked Ryan how to fund a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and Ryan deadpanned, “Remember, we’re not going to pay for that, recall?”

Trump is famous for his claim that Mexico will pay for the border wall.

Ryan continued, “We think we should secure the border, that’s for sure. … You should talk to the task forces for exactly how we should secure the border, but one thing that does unify all Republicans is that we should have a secure border.”

In the interview that took place on March 15, Harwood said, “We do have a clear front-runner in the Republican race. You and Donald Trump — how’s that going to work?”

Ryan replied, “We’ll make it work if it happens. I’m going to speak my mind. I’m going to defend conservatism as I understand it. I’m going to defend our ideas as the Republican Party. But we’re going to have to work with whoever our nominee is.”
