Former Toronto mayor Rob Ford has died at age 46 after battling cancer for 18 months.

A statement given by Ford’s family said he was a “dedicated man” who “spent his life serving the citizens of Toronto,” The Toronto Star reports.

Ford left office in 2014 following his diagnosis.

The former Toronto mayor became infamous due to leaked cell-phone footage of him smoking crack cocaine in 2013.

When asked about how his mayoralty will be remembered during a 2014 interview, Ford said: “They’re going to remember it the way they want to remember it. A lot of it’s, you know, personal choice. People know that I saved a lot of money and people are going to know that I had a few personal struggles and so you can remember it for what you want, but they’re definitely going to remember it.”
