Sen. [crscore]Ted Cruz[/crscore] blasted New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio for weakening the city’s fight against “radical Islamic terrorism” by deciding that “political correctness mattered more than keeping people safe.”

In an interview with “CBS This Morning” on Wednesday, Cruz doubled down on his call for “proactive policing” of Muslim neighborhoods, like police do already with gang infested neighborhoods in America.

Host Charlie Rose pressed Cruz on his plan to fight Islamic terrorism by using an increased “focus” of law enforcement patrols in neighborhoods with significant Muslim populations.

“Look. New York City, under Mayor Bloomberg, had a program that focused on, worked proactively with the Muslim community to stop radicalization to prevent attacks from radical Islamic terrorism before they occur,” Cruz responded.

“Now what happened, Mayor de Blasio came in and decided political correctness mattered more than keeping people safe. He disbanded the program.”

Noting that “gang violence is a real problem in a lot of places across the country,” Cruz said, “What does law enforcement do with proactive policing? You go into the programs where the gang violence is a problem and you work proactively to get the gang members off the street. And by the way, the people you’re correcting are the residents of those communities who are typically the victims with gang violence. It is often African-Americans and Hispanics, it’s low-income Americans often the victims of those violence. And by having a serious police presence there, you’re protecting those communities.”

“The same is true in the Muslim community where radical islamic terrorists, they don’t murder just Christians and Jews, they murder other Muslims as well. And we need to fight and defeat radical Islamic terrorism,” Cruz said.
