Republican presidential candidate Sen. [crscore]Ted Cruz[/crscore] was denounced by the country’s largest union Monday for advocating a national right-to-work law.

The AFL-CIO is the largest federation of associated unions in America at 12 million members. It hasn’t yet made a presidential endorsement, but made clear which candidates it doesn’t like — Cruz is the latest. The union declared Cruz its loser of the week for wanting a national right-to-work law.

“President Cruz would silence working people,” the AFL-CIO said on its blog. “For endorsing a national right to work law, which would serve little purpose other than to silence the voices of working people.”

Cruz announced his support for a national right-to-work law during a radio interview in Wisconsin, reports The Associated Press. Wisconsin is among 26 states to enact right-to-work when Gov. Scott Walker signed it into law last year. The policy outlaws mandatory union dues or fees as a condition of employment.

The passage of the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act first allowed states to decide whether they want to be right-to-work or not. Those opposed to the policy fear it could undermine worker rights and the ability to negotiate with their employer, but supporters say it simply provides workers with a choice and might attract businesses.

Cruz is not alone, as other Republican candidates are routinely attacked by the AFL-CIO. The union declared Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump its loser of the week Feb. 22 over a labor dispute his Las Vegas hotel is having, and again Feb. 29 for saying he likes right-to-work. Gov. Scott Walker was also named its loser of the week several times before dropping out of the presidential race.

The Trump campaign did not respond to request for comment by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
