President of Americans for Limited Government Rick Manning knows that “every time the government grows, freedom shrinks.” In this exclusive video interview for The Daily Caller News Foundation, Manning discusses three threats to national sovereignty or self-government, while decrying Congress’ weak leadership.

Manning and his team specialize in working the in-field of politics, which includes regulations, treaties and congressional strategy. President Barack Obama runs roughshod over Congress, he says, which explains the anti-establishment sentiment dominating the 2016 presidential race.

If a Republican Congress better functioned, bills like the Puerto Rico bailout would not proceed without provisions that either solved the underlying problem or made Obama pay a principled price for moving such a costly bill.

The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), according to Manning, is “the single most dangerous threat to our U.S. sovereignty that this country has faced short of a shooting war.” Many Republicans, including party leaders, are helping Obama enact the TPP, which the president says will “rewrite the rules of the global economy,” be they labor, environment, intellectual property or other perogatives of Congress.

Bipartisan planning between Congress and the White House is underway to pass TPP in the “lame duck” congressional session after the November election. Congress voted last year to expedite the treaty by voting for fast-track authority, so they cannot amend it and must act within a prescribed timetable without having to pass this treaty with a two-thirds vote in the Senate, Manning explains.

Manning also focuses on an intrusive regulation from United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), called the Affirmative Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule, which allows HUD to presume neighborhood discrimination occurs based on racial and ethnic makeup. With Manning’s help, this power grab over local community zoning was almost slowed with two congressional defunding votes, but the rider has not made it into a must-pass bill yet.

Manning’s advice to local communities who take HUD funding is, “the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.” Communities should avoid taking HUD funds that open up this federal meddling into local zoning.

Lastly, Manning’s organization has led the fight against Obama giving away the Internet to ICANN, a private, global panel that could not ensure protection of our First Amendment rights.
