A white Labrador died from exhaustion Friday after rescuing seven people from the ruins of an Ecuador earthquake.

Four-year-old Dayko is hailed as a hero by the Ibra firefighters who worked with the rescue lab for about three and a half years, reports the Telegraph. The vet was unable to save Dayko when he grew sick after rescuing seven trapped people from the 7.8 magnitude quake that killed hundreds of others.

Dayko died of “massive coronary myocardial infraction and acute respiratory failure.”

“We regret to inform you that today the [fire service] is in mourning because [we] just lost Dayko who participated in the work of searching in Pedernales,” the service said, according to a translation from the Telegraph. “This four legged friend gave his life in the line of duty.”

“You held high the name of the K9 unit,” the service added.

The service paid tribute to Dayko in a lengthy Facebook post extolling the canine’s work and the void he’ll leave behind. Pictures of Dayko and the burial service after his death accompany the post.
