Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol told a D.C.-based radio station on Thursday that he has been actively talking to Washington insiders about finding third-party candidates to counter the candidacies of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

“We should do better than Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump,” Kristol told WMAL Radio. He said he wants to “try hard to find a better president for our country than one of those two people. So that’s what I am trying to do.”

He believes a third-party candidate would “be great” if “it’s the right candidate.”

When asked whether he was actively working with people around D.C. to recruit a third-party candidate, Kristol responded that he was “trying to.”

“I’m trying to do my best. I mean, I don’t have some organizational infrastructure, though I think more people are interested, more serious people are interested than the conventional wisdom realizes, and I think the money would be there. The lawyers and the ballot access would be there. The operatives would be there. It could be put together pretty quickly,” he said.

Kristol’s objections to Trump are more personal than policy.

“I’ve been a pretty loyal Republican. I just can’t stomach Trump,” he told WMAL. “It’s much more character than policy. I just think Donald Trump is temperamentally unsuited and by character, unfit to be president of the United States.”
