D.C. Metro officials suspended service across three lines Thursday evening and closed two stations after reports of a smoke incident at the Federal Center station.

Service between Eastern Market and L’Enfant Plaza stations is temporarily suspended and officials have temporarily closed Capitol South and Eastern Market stations.

Metro said commuters should expect major delays and consider taking alternate routes as officials investigate the incident. Officials are not expanding on the “track problem,” however commuters reported smoke in the station and fire crews arrived on scene, reports WUSA9.

Riders tweeted showing the stations packed to the brim with delayed commuters.

Officials reportedly reversed some trains out of tunnels back onto station platforms due to the emergency. There are no reports of injuries and it remains unclear what caused the smoke incident. The silver line is only operating between Wiehle-Reston and Ballston stations. Officials warned riders to expect delays as they investigate the situation and sending shuttle buses to the affected stations, reports NBC Washington.

Metro officials will unveil a comprehensive maintenance plan Friday morning to address increasing saftey threats such as track fires.
