Tufts University in Massachusetts was hit with a car fire and bomb threats from someone claiming to support campus janitors and the labor movement, according to reports Tuesday.

Firefighters and police responded to the car fire Monday at the Medford-Somerville campus. Police uncovered a note at the scene which said there were bombs in campus buildings. A search of the buildings uncovered no threats and normal operations resumed within hours. The note also expressed support for campus janitors and the labor movement, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

“This car will show we aren’t messing around,” the note said. “The Labor movement must be taken seriously or there will be more bombs. We are with the janitors. We have keys to all the buildings.”

The note may reference an ongoing labor dispute between the college administration and campus janitors, reports The Washington Post. Union officials and student leaders have been protesting the university over the recent layoffs of 35 janitors. Union officials representing the janitors denounced the violence.

“[We] condemns any sort of violence, destruction of property, or harm to people,” 32BJ SEIU District 615 said in a statement. “The Union was shocked and dismayed to learn of the car fire and bomb threat at Tufts this morning. We pledge our full assistance with any official investigation, in whatever way we can help.”

The Tufts Labor Coalition, a student group, also said it wasn’t involved in the incident. The group has led some of the backlash against the school for firing the janitors. Tufts received an anonymous tip Sunday but it made no specific threats and the college forwarded it to police.
