The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has released video of a suicidal man with an automatic rifle peppering police cars with bullets as deputies take cover.
The video shows the April 27 incident, where three deputies responded to a call about a suicidal man. When they arrived, the man allegedly opened fire on them from his garage. The video was released Wednesday.
“The deputies were unable to return fire due to poor sight lines and concern that they couldn’t see who else may have been inside the garage,” the department said on Facebook.
The man reloaded and continued firing on the deputies as they take cover behind a car.
“I could hear the magazine drop, then a reload; it seemed to go so slowly,” Deputy Leith Chacon told Behind The Badge OCSD. “We just did what we had to do to survive. Training just kicked in.”
The man eventually dropped the gun and surrendered to police. No one was hurt. The department praised the deputies for not wildly firing back.
“The deputies involved showed incredible restraint to take cover, not blindly shoot at the suspect while he was firing at them, and to respond safely and swiftly when the suspect surrendered,” the department said on Facebook. “We share this video to demonstrate the extremely dangerous and unpredictable job that our deputies encounter.”
