Morley Safer — the legendary CBS news reporter — has died. He was 84.

Safer died Thursday, one week after he retired from the TV news magazine after a lengthy career.

He got his start at CBS as a correspondent in London before he was relocated to cover the Vietnam war from Saigon. He later moved on to “60 Minutes,” where made a name for himself.

He holds the record for being the longest-serving correspondent on the show with 919 reports.

A week ago, CBS had announced that Safer was retiring from the program and aired a special looking back at his entire career.

“After more than 50 years of broadcasting on CBS News and ’60 Minutes,’ I have decided to retire,” Safer said.

“It’s been a wonderful run, but the time has come to say goodbye to all of my friends at CBS and the dozens of people who kept me on the air. But most of all, I thank the millions of people who have been loyal to our broadcast.”
