Britain is following the sweeping trend across Europe of increased hostility toward Islam, according to a new ComRes poll.
A majority of Britons, 56 percent, don’t think Islam is compatible with British values. Statements on whether Islam promotes peace or advocates violence seem to polarize the Brits. Thirty-two percent agreed it promotes peace, while 33 percent said it promotes violence.
The poll also surveyed understandings of the word “caliphate” — the word for an Islamic state. Thirty-three percent said they associated the word with a “threat to the UK.”
Negative views of Islam are most common among the elderly, while people aged 18-24 are more positive.
A poll in Germany from earlier in May showed similar attitudes. A slightly higher portion than in the U.K., 61 percent, agreed with the statement: “Islam doesn’t belong in Germany.” The number went up sharply from 47 percent in January. Half of Germans, 51 percent, were willing to take it step further and say Muslims “don’t belong in Germany.”
