A 12-year-old girl has passed away after being injured at a Missouri rodeo over the weekend.

According to the Kansas City Star, Kalee Chandler was competing in a barrel race in Adrian on Saturday when her horse suffered a heart attack.

As the horse — which also died — fell to the ground, the middle schooler was pinned against the base of a fence.

She was rushed to the hospital but eventually succumbed to her injuries Monday evening.

“Everybody is very somber right now,” Kalee’s Superintendent Darin Carter said of the accient. “It’s a horrible tragedy that is going to stick with our school district and our community for a long time.”

Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson told the Star that Kalee was “excellent in everything she did” and “always had a smile on her face.”

A fund, the Kalee Chandler Love Fund, has been established for the family to help with medical and other expenses. Donations can be dropped off at Community First Bank in Butler, 915 W. Fort Scott St., or mailed to P.O. Box 407, Butler, Mo. 64730.
