Debra Messing apologized for posting an anti-gun selfie only minutes after the shooting on the campus of UCLA.

On Wednesday, the 47-year-old actress posted a letter to fans on her Twitter account saying she still believes in the cause but said her timing was off for pushing gun control. The tweet read, “Please Read.” (RELATED: Celebrities Call For Gun Control Minutes After Shooting On UCLA’s Campus)

“I was so shocked and struck by the horrible irony that yet another shooting was occurring as I was participating in this effort,” she wrote. “In an effort to highlight the irony, I posted a picture referencing the breaking news. I am heartbroken and embarrassed that many people misconstrued my actions and that I caused offense.”(RELATED: Hollywood Reacts To Trump Becoming The Presumptive GOP Nominee)

“The horrendous irony of the timing, I was hoping, would shine an even brighter light on the crisis and need for all of us to do something together to make the US safer,” she continued. “I am so truly sorry #wemustdobetter.”

Messing had posted a photo earlier in the day on Twitter of her wearing a T-shirt that read “Under the Gun” and said she was watching the shooting. Immediately following she received feed back for being insensitive. The tweet has since been deleted but was captured by a Washington Examiner reporter.

“HORRENDOUS Watching news about shooting at UCLA with casualties while taking selfie to bring awareness to gun violence,” she tweeted.
