California billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer announced he’s endorsing Hillary Clinton for president Wednesday.
“Hillary Clinton is an experienced leader who will lead us to victory because she embodies the best values of our country. She will put the needs of working families first. She will be fearless in her pursuit of solutions to the most urgent challenges we face,” and she will “move us rapidly towards becoming “the clean energy superpower of the 21st century,” Steyer said in a press statement on Twitter.
“Now is the time for us to unite and defeat Trump,” Steyer tweeted.

Steyer, who has sunk tens of millions of dollars into environmental campaigns, is no stranger to political campaigns. The Democratic moneyman shoveled more than $8.5 million into unsuccessful bids to get anti-fossil fuel candidates elected to office two years ago.
Steyer financed Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall’s unsuccessful reelection bid in 2014 –Udall received $4 million from the wealthy environmentalist. The donation and Udall’s anti-fracking positions were unpopular in fossil fuel-dependent Colorado.
He’s back at it this year.
Steyer’s political action committee NextGen Climate announced a $25 million campaign in April encouraging young people to support and vote for green energy candidates in the November 2016 election.
Steyer has made no bones about his debilitating fear of a Donald Trump presidency, telling reporters in May that the presumptive Republican nominee would be a catastrophe for the Paris climate summit agreement.
“Trump’s denunciation of the Paris climate accord is not only short-sighted, but would be terribly costly for America and our ability to lead the world,” Steyer said following comments Trump made in May indicating his willingness to renegotiate the Paris climate summit agreement. “We cannot go backwards on this important step towards a clean energy economy that benefits all our families.”
