Belgian Man Demands Assisted Suicide Because He Hates Being Gay

As my good friends on the left are always reminding me, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being gay. In fact, it’s preferable to being straight. Not only is gay marriage a good idea, but if I refuse to participate in a gay wedding, my livelihood should be threatened. Let the word go out, across the land: Love wins. Submit or be destroyed.

Another truism of the left is that a human being has the right to end his or her own life at any time, for any reason. There are too many people on the planet as it is, we’re told. The more quickly we can start the harvest, the better. Life is a burden, and we should help anybody who wants out. (To which I reply, “By all means, after you!” They don’t like that.)

But what happens when those two ideas come into conflict? Which one wins out? Jonathan Blake, BBC News:

A gay man in Belgium is trying to end his life because he cannot accept his sexuality. He told the Victoria Derbyshire programme he wanted to be granted euthanasia on the grounds of extreme psychological suffering…

Sébastien, whose name we have changed to protect his identity, is from Belgium – where euthanasia has been legal since 2002…

Sébastien has undergone 17 years of therapy, counselling and medication and believes he has no other option…

“I have always thought about death. Looking back on my earliest memories, it’s always been in my thoughts. It’s a permanent suffering, like being a prisoner in my own body,” he says.

On one hand, it’s terrible that this man is so consumed with self-loathing that he sees no other way out. Just when you thought Western society had turned a corner, you’re reminded that there’s still so much progress to be made.

On the other hand… who are you to say that this man should continue to suffer? Shouldn’t he be able to determine his own fate? Can you really demand that he pretend to be happy, just because his unhappiness is inconvenient to your agenda? What do you propose, some sort of conversion therapy? He just needs to pray the shame away?

Are you a homophobe, or are you a pro-lifer? It has to be one or the other. Which sort of bigot do you want to be?

Now I’ll leave you alone with your cognitive dissonance. Enjoy.
