Florida Gov. Rick Scott has called Sunday’s attack on a gay Orlando nightclub an “act of terror,” while Sen. Bill Nelson has confirmed there may be some connection to Islamic State.

Scott’s comments came during a press briefing early Sunday afternoon, just hours after the shooter, Omar Mateen, killed 50 and injured another 53 at a nightclub called Pulse. Additionally, Florida Sen. Bill Nelson has told reporters Sunday he has spoken to intelligence officials who tell him Mateen’s attack does have some connection to Islamic State.

A state of emergency for Orange county has been declared in response to the attacks while police continue to investigate the crime and notify the family members of those slain.

“This is clearly an act of terror,” said Scott. “You just cant imagine this would happen happen to our community, our state, or anywhere in our country. But for somebody to go in there and be an active shooter, and take … that number of lives … and injure that many people, is clearly an act of terror.”
