Kirstie Alley got shut down by gun experts after she made a quick judgment about the weapon Omar Mateen used when he opened fire on an Orlando gay club early Sunday morning.
Mateen did not use a “fully automatic assault rifle,” but instead used a legal semi-automatic AR-15.
He also had two firearms licenses legally, but that didn’t stop Alley from writing this tweet.
“WAKE UP AMERICA! BAN SALES OF FULLY AUTOMATIC ASSAULT RIFLES to THE GENERAL PUBLIC!!” Alley tweeted Sunday. “And ALL firearms to people w psychiatric histories.” (RELATED: Kirstie Alley Just Endorsed Donald Trump For President)
Gun experts were quick to point out her mistake, and she later deleted the tweet.
@kirstiealley these are both semi auto, work the same. Assault weapon is an invented term pic.twitter.com/bfs26KcTNx

@1911G_fan @RotNScoundrel @kirstiealley The media and politicians rely on people not understanding firearms in order to push their politics.

@kirstiealley semi automatics are not assault weapons and yes semi automatics are legal. Assault weapon is a made up term to make guns scary

Alley later admitted she “misspoke.”
“Is a semi automatic an assault weapon legal?”
