“Finding Dory” became the box office king of animated films with a record breaking $136.2 million in its opening weekend.

Not only that, but the delightful ocean tale has also set the record among animated films for highest Thursday gross ($9.2 million), best Friday/single day ($54.95 million), and Sunday ($36.5 million).

Worldwide, “Finding Dory” earned a colossal $322.4 million with $186.2 million coming in from overseas. Beating out “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” ($135.6 million) has earned “Finding Dory” the honor of being Disney’s biggest opener for a non-Marvel or “Star Wars” film.

It is the studio’s seventh-biggest debut overall.

With little legitimate competition for the next few weeks, “Finding Dory” has an opportunity to become this summer’s biggest hit at the box office. At the very least, the $936.7 million worldwide total of “Finding Nemo” is well within the sequel’s grasp.
