John Legend said Republicans are cowards after a vote to increase funding for federal background checks didn’t pass Monday.

In several tweets Monday, the 37-year-old singer said the GOP needed to be voted out of leadership in order “to get anything done on guns.” (RELATED: Kim Kardashian: ‘Gun Laws HAVE To Change’)

Senators voted 53-47 on a proposal that would reauthorize funding for the National Criminal Instant Background Check System and 44-56 on a vote that would require a background check for most sales or transfers of guns. Both needed 60 votes to move forward.
