Sen. Marco Rubio has officially announced that he will run for re-election to the U.S. Senate in order to continue to act as a check on the president, whether it’s Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.

During his presidential campaign, the Florida senator said on multiple occasions that he would become a private citizen if his presidential bid was unsuccessful.

Last week, after the Orlando terrorist attack, Rubio told Hugh Hewitt that the event pushed him to rethink “where you can be most useful to your country.” (AUDIO: Orlando Terrorist Attack Could Compel Rubio To Rethink Leaving Senate)

On Wednesday, Rubio told Fox News’s Chris Wallace, “I know people in politics don’t like to admit that they changed their mind, but I changed my mind and the people of Florida deserve to know why.”

Watch:

“And there’s a lot of reasons, I think it’s been clearly outlined that I’ve been frustrated with what’s happening in the Senate. Most Americans are — with the gridlock and the inability to move forward on things.”

“But I think the real reason, and the deepest reason, no matter who wins this presidential election, the Senate’s role, as being able to act as a check and balance bad ideas from the president, I think are going to matter more in 2017 than perhaps they ever have in our history, and that’s saying a lot, given what we’re facing now. So I really deeply believe that I can contribute to that.”

“I think whether it’s Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, our next president, no matter who our next president is, we’re going to need senators that are willing to encourage them to make the right decisions.”
