Department of State technical staffers temporarily disabled anti-virus software on their systems in an effort to resolve delivery problems with Clinton’s private server, according to the Associated Press.
The emails were released under court order to the conservative legal advocacy group Judicial Watch on Wednesday. The group has sued the State Department over access to public records related to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s time at the department between 2009 and 2013.
The emails, reviewed by The Daily Caller News Foundation, reveal the efforts by State Department officials to repair Clinton’s server after she complained about sent emails that were not being received by other department employees. Thomas Lawrence, described by the AP as a senior department official, wrote on Dec. 21, 2010 that Huma Abedin was asking about the server issues and what followed was a series of emails that shows a level of frustration within department staff.
At one point, department staffer Ken LaVolpe told the IT staff that, “this should trump all other activities.” According to the emails, Lawrence cautioned after they turned off some of the security features that, “We view this as a Band-Aid and fear it’s not 100 percent fully effective.”
It was initially reported that the security features described in the emails were only turned off on Clinton’s private server, but State Department spokesman John Kirby confirmed later in the day that the emails released to Judicial Watch actually described “a series of troubleshooting measures to the department’s system, not Secretary Clinton’s system.”
Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, stated that, “the new Hillary Clinton email records show she had zero interest in disclosing her emails to the public as the law requires.” He also criticized the Obama administration for “giving special accommodations to Clinton’s email system, which the agency knew was unsecure, was likely hacked, and was not transparent under FOIA.”
Presumptive Republican nominee for president Donald Trump attacked Clinton again on Wednesday over the email controversy, predicting that, “while we may not know what is in those deleted emails, our enemies probably do… so they probably now have a blackmail file over someone [Clinton] who wants to be president of the United States.”
