A Key West gun store owner vowed to arm gay people after selling out of his AR-15s within a week of the Orlando shooting.

Dan Acevedo, owner of Southernmost Guns, told the Miami Herald that the day after the Orlando shooting, he received his first AR-15 order.

By that Friday, Acevedo had sold out of his AR-15s, which usually cost about $750. He claimed that gun sales have been rising in the gay community, a claim that other gun store owners have made in the past few weeks as well. Acevedo also offered a discount for concealed carry classes for gay people, which typically cost $85. “I want to give back,” he told the Miami Herald.

Ben Moran, who works at the Palm Desert branch of Second Amendment Sports, told News Channel 3 that he saw more gay people come in to buy guns after the Orlando shooting.

The Florida Department of Law processed almost double the number of background checks for guns after the Orlando shooting than it did the previous year. On Sunday through Tuesday following June 12, the Florida Department of Law ran 9,800 background checks. During the same, three-day period last year, the department processed approximately 4,500 background checks.

Sam Smith, a local who participates in the Key West Pride Parade, told the Miami Herald that he doesn’t know of any people who went to get a concealed-carry permit. He has thought about getting a gun for himself.

“It does give you thought. We really are vulnerable and a lot of people don’t understand us,” Smith told the Miami Herald.
