More Americans are noticing the emerging double standards for political activism, setting off alarm bells across the nation. Swarming bias on social media looks mild compared to increasingly aggressive, disruptive acts against conservatives, police, donors and corporations who dare to dissent from liberal orthodoxy.
A coalition of radical agitators, using loaded language, manipulated facts and pressure tactics to scare off dues-paying members, are trying to drain and destroy the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) — a policy-driven think tank for conservative state legislators.
At a recent ALEC board dinner in Pittsburgh, 60 leaders were disturbed when thirty angry, intimidating agitators suddenly entered the quiet hotel room with umbrellas, megaphones. They aggressively chanted and even threw glitter into the board’s food and drinks.
ALEC is targeted because 69 of 99 state legislatures are now controlled by conservatives, according to its CEO Lisa Nelson. ALEC is effective in providing model legislation to help states pursue limited government and free markets – an anathema to the American left.
This conservative organization’s most recent annual budget was $7.6 million, but it is up against radical groups with $800-900 million of the left’s “dark money” attacking them.
Nelson says in this exclusive video interview for The Daily Caller News Foundation, the donors giving “dark money” to these groups include George Soros, Tom Steyer, and the Democracy Alliance. Some of ALEC’s adversaries include the Center for Media Democracy, Common Cause, Color of Change, and the Citizen Engagement Lab in Berkeley, CA.
Prominent Democrats even sent letters to major corporations threatening them to leave ALEC or else. Corporations that cave to one demand are given more demands until the entity is a force to manipulate, helping the left fundamentally transform America.
The left is currently animated by issues like climate change and voter integrity to silence ALEC.
Rep. Sean Duffy has worried that taxpayer dollars are finding their way through “sue and settle” efforts by the Obama Administration into these left-wing groups.
Nelson thought she was fully steeped in political battling, having worked with former Speaker Newt Gingrich, GOPAC and two corporate offices. “When I got to ALEC, it was a whole new level of intimidation and manipulation of the facts,” Nelson says.
Since Nelson headed up ALEC as CEO, the organization is pushing back and is now adding new members.
Nelson warns others targeted by these radical groups to stand strong without caving. Often the intimating voices are “not your constituents or customers,” instead, “they are a few people at a key board in a townhouse somewhere in America trying to manipulate and intimidate you.” She likens it more to the “Wizard of Oz” — one little man behind a curtain.
