Twenty percent of babies born with the Zika virus do not have the visible physical symptoms, such as shrunken heads, that are associated with the virus.

Many babies who were initially deemed healthy due to their normal size heads, actually have brain damage as a result of Zika, according to Brazilian researchers. The spread of Zika has ravaged Brazil and even caused 150 renowned public health experts to write that the upcoming Olympics be moved or postponed.

Zika is spreading throughout Brazil and the Western Hemisphere via mosquitoes carrying the virus. The virus is also transmitted through sex, according to a 2011 study by the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

A pregnant woman who develops a rash towards the completion of pregnancy often gives birth to a baby with Zika who has healthy head growth. The World Health Organization declared Zika a global public health emergency over the damage it can do to newborns.

Many would-be Olympic athletes pulled out of participating in the upcoming Rio 2016 Games in August. There are fears that tourist attendance will be less than expected out of fear of contracting the virus.

Most people infected with the Zika virus have no symptoms and are unaware of having it. The Zika virus has affected people in most U.S. states and the District of Columbia. People in the U.S. have acquired the virus due to travel countries that have been severely affected by the mosquito-borne illness.
