An explosion in New York City severed a man’s foot and left some wondering about terror attacks, but authorities now say it was simply a firework accident.
Connor Golden, a tourist in the city, climbed down from a rock Sunday in Central Park and stepped on a an explosive that authorities now say was likely a homemade firework. The firework severed the man’s left foot, The New York Daily News reports.
“It just demolished his foot,” Golden’s friend, Thomas Hinds, told the Daily News. “His foot was mutilated.”
Golden and his friends say the firework did not belong to them, but was left by someone else. Connor was taken to the hospital for surgery. The FBI is investigating the incident. Lieutenant Mark Torre, commander of the bomb squad, told Reuters it did not appear the placement or design of the firework was intended to hurt anyone.
“At this time, we have no evidence this is related to terrorism,” NYPD Deputy Chief John O’Connell told reporters. He also said there were “no specific credible threats directed at New York or the July Fourth celebrations.”
