An observant citizen and his handgun thwarted a robbery and potential kidnapping early Thursday morning.

WRBC reported that a man wielding a large blade entered a Marathon Gas Station in East Ridge, TN around 2 a.m. and demanded money and cigarettes during an aggravated robbery. Upon leaving the store, the suspect grabbed a female clerk and forced her to go with him, threatening to kill her.

A customer in the parking lot realized that a robbery was ongoing and that a clerk was being held against her will. He grabbed a handgun from his vehicle and fired multiple shots, hitting the suspect at least once in the torso. The suspected robber was transported to a hospital where he later died from his wounds.

Police have not released the names of those involved and it is unlikely that the shooter will face any charges. The investigation is ongoing.
