Authorities fatally shot a man outside a D.C. Metro station Monday after officers encountered him pointing a gun at someone on the street.

A Metro Transit Police officer fired on the unidentified man just a block away from the Deanwood Metro station at the corner of 49th and Quarles Street in northwest D.C.. Metro police responded to a report of suspicious activity and found the man shooting his weapon. Police confronted the man, at which point the man began shooting at officers, reports WUSA9.

The unidentified shooter fired multiple rounds at the officer before he fired back. The officer struck the shooter in the upper torso. Authorities took the shooter to a local hospital where he died from the wound. No officers were injured in the course of the shootout. D.C. Metro officials are responding to a troubling double-digit spike in the crime rate this year on Metro trains and around stations, increasing patrols and security.

A spokesman for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) said in May crime is up year-over-year by about 10 percent and is increasing. The alleged rape of a woman at knife point on a moving red line train in April, which broke in May, drew renewed concern among riders about the growing crime trend.

Recently a 15-year-old was shot and killed on the platform of the Deanwood station while on his way to get a a haircut the day before Easter with his family.
