Republican Sen. Ben Sasse announced Thursday he will not be attending the Republican National Convention in July, joking he would rather take his kids to watch dumpster fires across the state.

“Sen. Sasse will not be attending the convention and will instead take his kids to watch some dumpster fires across the state, all of which enjoy more popularity than the current front-runners,” a spokesman for Sasse told The Hill.

Sasse joined the “Never Trump” movement this Spring. “Why shouldn’t America draft an honest leader, you know, an honest adult?” he wrote in a Facebook post in May.

Speaking to the political fallout of his decision in his home state of Nebraska, Sasse told the New York Times: “I don’t know where it’s written that fighting for what you believe in will always be popular with 51 percent.”

Sasse attended Trump’s meeting with lawmakers at the Republican Capitol Hill Club Thursday. “I’m planning to listen,” Sasse said, “But I’m particularly interested in his views on executive restraint.”
