Shetamia Taylor used her own body to shield her four children from bullets, taking one in the calf, in the middle of a tragic gunfight that ensued during the protests in Dallas July 7.

Her sister Theresa Williams described how when the shooting first started, “Taylor threw herself over her sons” according to the Associated Press. The hero mother is undergoing surgery today at a Dallas hospital after being hit in the right calf.

At around 2 a.m. it was reported that two of the four sons became separated from their mother during the pandemonium. Williams said they were behind a police barricade at a nearby hotel. The hotel was blockaded because it was adjacent to a parking garage where “police exchanged gunfire with a suspect” according to the Associated Press.

On her Facebook page, Taylor is listed as a former student of Minneapolis Community and Technical College in Minnesota as well as a Minneapolis high school. According to the page, she now lives in Garland, Texas.

The Philando Castile shooting, which fueled the Dallas protest, occurred in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
