Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a registered Democrat who is reportedly being vetted to be Donald Trump’s vice president, said on Sunday, “I vote for leaders… and I vote for America.”

Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” Flynn said that he didn’t know he was being vetting by Trump but that, “Service to this country is an honor. I am honored to be even in this discussion. It’s amazing to me for a kid from a little town in the smallest state in the union, Rhode Island, it’s pretty, pretty big deal and I take it very seriously. If people are serious about it, you know, I have to be serious about it.” (RELATED: Could Retired Gen. Michael Flynn Be Trump’s Dark Horse VP Pick?)

Host Martha Raddatz followed up asking Flynn about being a registered Democrat. The retired general replied, “I grew up as a Democrat in a very strong Democratic family but I will tell you that the Democratic Party that exists in this country is not the Democratic Party that I grew up around in my upbringing. Not at all. Totally different.”

Flynn went on to say, “I vote for leaders. That’s what I vote for. When I vote and I honestly I didn’t vote much in the military because I served whoever was the commander in chief in the military. But I vote for leadership. Tat’s what I vote for and I vote for America.”
