A group of therapists recently announced they would offer reduced cost or free counseling sessions to Black Lives Matter members.
Damon Constantinides, a Philadelphia therapist, recently called on local therapists to offer reduced priced services to Black Lives Matter activists, reports Newsworks. Already, approximately 17 therapist have signed up to donate time to counsel Black Lives Matter activists.
“I was trying to think about how, as a white person, I could best support the Black Lives Matter movement with the skills and resources that I have,” Constantinides told Newsworks.
Healing For Activists lists the therapists who are “committed to supporting Black Lives Matters and the struggle to end racism and the killing of black people.” Each therapist either offers a free counseling service or a reduced price session to Black Lives Matter activists.
“These activists are fighting social injustice in the community and also in our country. But, individually, they may also have struggles inside,” said Ebony Eubanks, a therapist who will offer a reduced rate for her services.
The website claims that the therapists understand “the history of racism and other oppressions in the mental health care field” and that some people may not feel comfortable working with therapists of certain races or sexual orientations.
One therapist, Malyka Cardwell, told Newsworks that some may prefer a black therapist or a female therapist.
“We’re just giving people the option to choose and letting them know that we all can identify, but we recognize that you may not be comfortable with certain people, or you may be more comfortable with certain people,” Cardwell said told Newsworks. Cardwell will be offering free services to activists.
