Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman’s John Watson are back in a brand new teaser trailer for “Sherlock” season four. The series will return to MASTERPIECE on PBS in 2017, but you can catch the early glimpse below right now.

The upcoming season of the critically acclaimed modern retelling looks to be funny, heartfelt, suspenseful and filled with the usual entertaining drama. It will open with Sherlock returning to British soil after his very brief exile from his home country in season three’s conclusion. It will also follow Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, as they prepare to become parents for the first time.

The show’s Christmas special — “Sherlock” The Abominable Bride” — was the most watched entry in “Sherlock” history with 11.6 million total viewers. The Victorian throwback was also released in theaters worldwide to augment the TV broadcast. Needless to say, “Sherlock” is hitting its peak ahead of its highly-anticipated fourth season.

Creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are returning as showrunners. Moffatt teased fans last year, saying that in season four “there are answers coming to questions which nobody has asked. There’s one thing that no one has really brought up…”

He also said that season four “is going to be…I suppose you’d say…consequences. It’s consequences. Chickens come to roost. It’s dark in some ways — obviously it’s great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that — but there’s a sense of…things…coming back to bite you. It’s not a safe, sensible way to live. It’s hilarious and exhilarating some days, but some days it’s going to be bloody frightening.”
