Democratic Senate nominee Katie McGinty called Republican Sen. Pat Toomey “an asshole” during a press conference on the minimum wage Monday.
The press conference discussed the Democratic nominee’s plan to pursue a $15 minimum wage. Her comments came after President of Communications Workers of America Chris Shelton called the current minimum wage “bullshit.”
“I think I might borrow from Chris’s speech there in terms of Pat Toomey. He’s an asshole, dammit,” McGinty proclaimed.
The Senate Leadership Fund, a group designed to ensure Republicans maintain the Senate, fired out an email immediately, according to The Hill, “Katie McGinty showed absolutely zero class in using profanity to insult Sen. Pat Toomey on the campaign trail.”
McGinty’s remarks occur around the 16-minute mark in the video, which was posted by the living wage group “Raise It Damn It.”
The National Republican Senatorial Committee criticized McGinty’s remarks, The Hill reported, asking if Democratic leadership condoned “this type of language and name calling?”
“I regret the language I used and apologize to Senator Toomey. Our campaign is about moving Pennsylvania forward and we’re going to continue to talk about the issues that are important to Pennsylvania families,” McGinty told The Philadelphia Enquirer in an email from her spokesperson.
McGinty overturned Toomey’s lead in the polls in an NBC poll published in mid-July, earning a three-point lead, at 47 to 44 percent. The Real Clear Average still gives Toomey a slight edge in the race.
