California Sen. Barbara Boxer told the audience Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention that with Hillary Clinton as president, women will no longer die in “back alley” abortions.

Boxer gave a speech in support of Clinton, addressing minimum wage and abortion. At one point, she claimed that by voting for Clinton, women would no longer die from “back alley” abortions.

“Well, I have a message for Donald Trump and Mike Pence: we are not going back to the dark days when women died in back alleys! We are never going back! We’re moving forward with Hillary Clinton!” Boxer said.
Boxer uses the term “back alley” misleadingly; in her speech, she insinuates that before abortions were legal, women were dying because they were having abortions performed in the backs of alleys. It’s a common misconception, and even more common among Democrats.
The term “back alley” actually refers to how women had to enter an abortion clinic prior to Roe v. Wade. Women were instructed to enter the doctor’s office later at night via a back alley entrance. Doing so prevented anyone exposure of the clinic and the woman in the performance of an illegal act.
