If the zeitgeist wants to know anything about Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough these days, it’s not about their dopey insistence that they are just brighter than everyone else and were never in the tank for Donald Trump as they predicted his primary win.

I sort of believe them that they are not in bed with Trump.

But each other — are they in bed with each other? Now that’s what everyone wants to know.

TVNewser did an interview with the duo at the DNC in Philadelphia. And probably the most important thing that came through in the conversation is what was not said, not what was. Which is that neither denied that a romance exists between them.

Unfortunately for all the avid “Morning Joe” watchers out there, the interviewer decided to completely bail when it came time to have some balls and actually ask the question: So are you two dating or what?

The interviewer went with the lamest headline imaginable: Joe’s political aspirations.

Who cares?

The headline: “Joe Scarborough Not Ruling Out a Run for Office, But ‘Not for a While.’”

(Zzzzzzzz)

The only thing worse than hearing about Scarborough’s political aspirations is hearing him yammer on about his time in Congress.

Getting back to their relationship, here’s what they said:

Mika: I mean look, I don’t really want to talk about my personal life, but since I’m on television I have to assume that it’s fair game if people want to report on the fact that I’m divorced, which is a really sad and a hard time for my family and I consider it a failure, and a sad, hard, difficult, traumatic time for everybody in my family. I really don’t want to go further. I don’t have any plans to be very public in general about my personal life because I’m just right now very worried about everybody in my family and that was hard to have those headlines out there. I fully understand that it is fair game. I didn’t push back that much to the fact that they wanted to do a big story on it, but it was hard. It was really hard for everybody.

TVNewser: And Joe?

Joe: Well, you know, as always I defer to Mika on whatever she says (laughs). I totally agree with her it’s a tough enough time for Mika and sorting through everything. She wants to keep it as low-key as possible for her family.

And with that, the asinine interviewer moved the conversation to Gretchen Carlson, Fox News and Willie Geist, the child birthed by their TV marriage. They stress that the show’s chemistry doesn’t work without him.

Not that Geist isn’t a gem. But who really believes that?

In late June, New York Post’s “Page Six” broke of the news of Mika’s “hush-hush” divorce from James Hoffer, her husband of 23 years. They said her quiet divorce fueled “chatter” of a budding romance.

At the time, a NBC insider told the gossip column, “Everybody at 30 Rock knows they are a couple . . . They are constantly together, they arrive and leave events together, even on weekends.”

Reaction was dim. The chattering class decided if the couple comes out of the closet it’ll wreck the show.

Still, the on-air duo has officially not denied a romantic relationship.

Which may be right where they want to keep it.

Tucked away in the closet for a rainy day.
