Former Gov. Jeb Bush’s son George P. Bush published an online video over the weekend encouraging Republicans to unite behind Republican nominee Donald Trump.
“From Team Bush it’s a bitter pill to swallow,” Bush told Republicans. “You get back up and you help the man that won and you make sure that we stop Hillary Clinton.”
George is the only Bush to announce his support for Trump. Jeb strongly opposed Trump and was viciously hammered by him in the primaries. Jeb announced he wouldn’t vote for Trump after dropping from the primaries.
Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush also publicly announced they will not support Trump. Both enthusiastically endorsed Sen. John McCain in 2008, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in 2012.
Jeb’s official statement in May discussed the “strong character” needed to run the country. “American voters have made it clear that Washington is broken, but I’m not optimistic that either of the leading candidates for President will put us on a better course.”
“Donald Trump has not demonstrated that temperament or strength of character. He has not displayed a respect for the Constitution. And, he is not a consistent conservative. These are all reasons why I cannot support his candidacy.”
