Despite earning $540 million at the worldwide box office, progress on a sequel to Brad Pitt’s 2013 zombie thriller “World War Z” has been slow at best. The project has seen a few directors sign on only to depart shortly after, most recently with Antonio Bayona jumping ship for “Jurassic World 2.”

But now, the follow up seems to be on track thanks to the help of A-list Academy Award nominee David Fincher.

Variety reports that Fincher is coming on board and that Pitt and Co. will begin filming early next year. This will mark the fourth time the director-actor pair have teamed up following their work together on the critically acclaimed “Se7en,” “Fight Club” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” This will be Fincher’s first film since 2014’s well-received “Gone Girl.”

After several delays, the “World War Z” sequel was scheduled to hit theaters on June 9, 2017. However, Paramount studios is once again expected to push the release date in order to give the project enough time to get going.

The original “World War Z” also struggled with its fair share of production issues. The studio shelled out a lot of money to reshoot the third act after several delays and spent $190 million on production. But the final product was a hit and turned out to be Pitt’s most successful movie at the box office.
