Carolina Panthers superstar quarterback Cam Newton slapped down the idea that criticism of him is rooted in racism.

“It’s not racism. Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion,” Newton told GQ when asked if he felt fans were racist towards him. (SLIDESHOW: 12 Times Russell Wilson’s Wife Ciara Was Absolutely Stunning)

He also added, “I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not. It’s not. Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation.”

Newton has faced intense scrutiny for his actions on and off of the field. He has been heavily criticized in the media for his celebrations, and was hammered for walking out of his postgame press conference after losing the Super Bowl.
