The current Democratic vice presidential nominee reportedly once said that former President Bill Clinton should step down after his affair with White House Intern Monica Lewinsky.
In 2002, Republican speaker of the House of Delegates in Virginia Vance Wilkins faced sexual assault allegations and paid $100,000 to cover it up.
Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine was the lieutenant governor at that time, and wrote an op-ed in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, claiming that all politicians should resign over sex scandals, including Bill Clinton.
“If the allegations are true, (Wilkins) should definitely resign,” Kaine said, adding that he expected the same of Bill Clinton. “That is an intolerable way to treat women and it’s not something that the state should be dragged through.”
Kaine’s feelings regarding Clinton’s wanderings in the White House, according to the Associated Press, are also widely known. Kaine told reporters, “When I read it this morning, my reaction was the same I had when I read about the Clinton-Lewinsky affair: this is not appropriate conduct. It’s beneath the dignity of the office.”
Kaine is already doing damage control. “(Kaine) believes this election is about Hillary Clinton’s vision to make historic investments to create good paying jobs, make college debt free and build an economy that works for everyone, not re-litigating personal issues from the distant past,” Kaine spokesperson Amy Dudley told the Daily Beast.
