U.S.-based think tank Demos found a dramatic rise in Islamophobic tweets in July, after a tide of Islamic terror attacks across Europe.

Demos’s revealed to the BBC that 7000 Islamophobic tweets/day in July, compared to a baseline number of 2500 tweets/day sent in April. Demos has 49 words and hashtags it considers Islamophobic, which it used to compile its data.

The tweets unsurprisingly coinciding with the July 14 terror attack in Nice. Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a French-Tunisian citizen, killed 85 people by driving a massive truck through a large crowd celebrating Bastille Day. Demos also found a correlation between the rise in tweets, and the July 15 attempted coup in Turkey. Secular elements of the Turkish military attempted a coup against the democratically elected Islamist government in Turkey.

Demos’s analysis also noted the vast majority of the tweets originated from Europe, namely France, the Netherlands and Germany. Both France and Germany experienced a slew of terror attacks in July. A 17 year old recent Afghan migrant hacked four people on a German train in the late hours of July 18. The next day a Syrian refugee blew himself up in a German bar after being denied asylum.

Days later two French terrorists stormed a historic Normandy church Tuesday and forced an 85-year-old priest to kneel before slitting his throat. One of the terrorists wore an electronic tracking device and was on a French terror watchlist.

Nearly 1.5 million  migrants have come to Germany from active war zones like Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. In January 2016, migrants seeking asylum were tied to dozens of sexual assaults in Cologne, Germany. The incident significantly sparked public opinion against migration to Germany. Germany’s open door refugee policy is also seen as a motivating factor behind the United Kingdom’s recent referendum to leave the European Union. Many U.K. citizens were concerned about being forced to resettle migrants into their communities.
