CNN blasted Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s appeal to black voters Saturday, suggesting his outreach was pointless because he opposes restoring voting rights to convicted felons.
Trump has made a renewed push to appeal to black voters since shaking up his campaign last week. In a Friday speech, he accused the Democratic Party of betraying black interests, pointing to their higher poverty and unemployment rates, failing schools, and blighted neighborhoods.
“Look at how much African-American communities have suffered under Democratic Control. To those hurting, I say: what do you have to lose by trying something new?” Trump said. On Saturday, he followed up this pitch by saying Republicans “must do better” at appealing to black voters.
But according to CNN, this push for support falls short, apparently because Trump also dislikes letting felons vote, which is allegedly a central interest for blacks.
“Trump wants GOP to court black voters — then slams voting rights for felons,” CNN’s Saturday headline says. Though probably unintentional, the headline gives the insinuation that a huge proportion of blacks are felons and thus are impacted by laws in 48 states that limit felon voting rights.
Blacks are more affected by such laws, due to their higher crime rates, but nevertheless a large majority of black Americans are not felons. At any particular time, only about 8 percent of black Americans are unable to vote due to a felony conviction. The majority of disenfranchised felons are white.
