CNN is equating Donald Trump’s stance against restoring voting rights for convicted felons as counter to his outreach to the African-American community.

In a story originally entitled “Trump wants GOP to court black voters — then slams voting rights for felons,” CNN reporters Ashley Killough and Karl de Vries note Trump’s statement the GOP must do more to court black voters, then write, “But in the same speech here, he again slammed an order by the state’s Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, to restore voting rights to some convicted felons who have completed their sentences, a move McAuliffe says could help African-Americans who were disproportionally affected by laws that put lifetime bans on felons.”

After restating Trump’s, “What the hell do you have to lose?” appeal to black voters, CNN equated black voters with felons again. They write, “Yet on Saturday, Trump — who has publicly raised the specter of a “rigged” election in recent weeks as polls have shown him trailing Clinton — ripped McAuliffe, a longtime Clinton friend and ally, for his decision earlier this year to restore voting rights to thousands of convicted felons.”

After the story, particularly its headline, was criticized on social media, the headline was changed slightly to “Trump slams voting rights for felons, wants GOP to court black voters.”
